A native Texan, he has achieved eminence in the State of Texas, in the nation, and throughout much of the world as a scholar, educational administrator and bibliophile. As successively the Provost and President of the University of Texas at Austin and the Chancellor of the University of Texas System, he has held some of the highest positions of educational leadership in this State. As a participant in numerous national and international councils, he has contributed importantly in a wide area to the improvement of higher education and to the development of the resources of learning. Perhaps above all else he is known and honored for his leadership in developing at the University of Texas at Austin one of the world's truly outstanding university libraries. For all these achievements and particularly for his vision and effective action in library development, this University is proud to confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa.
